CBD for Dog Seizures

Many people are aware of the potential of cannabis and CBD to treat a wide range of health conditions, including seizures in dogs. Anecdotal evidence from animal experts and dog owners indicates CBD might be an effective alternative treatment for epilepsy and muscle spasms. At Good Stuff Dispensary, we understand how scary it can be to see your canine friend having a seizure. CBD offers a safe and natural treatment for seizures in dogs.

CBD Oil for Dogs

As the name may suggest, CBD is derived from cannabis. Now, don’t get it wrong; CBD is not the same as marijuana. Although cannabidiol is one of the chemical compounds in marijuana, CBD oil for dogs is derived from hemp. Unlike marijuana, hemp-derived CBD is legal in all U.S. states. In addition, it contains less than .3 percent THC, the psychoactive chemical compound that can make you high. Therefore, hemp-derived CBD is safe for both humans and dogs and cannot make your dog high.

Despite limited developments in the world of CBD research, there is great potential in medicinal CBD. For example, several studies indicate CBD could manage some of the symptoms of anxiety, pain, and seizures in dogs.

Evidence indicates CBD could also minimize the symptoms of cancer thanks to its neuroprotective properties. This also means CBD could help people and pets with neurodegenerative disorders.

Causes of Seizures in Dogs

Seizures in dogs may indicate various underlying health conditions, including kidney disease, head injury, electrolyte imbalance, anemia, stroke, brain cancer, and blood sugar complications. Seizures in dogs manifest in multiple ways depending on the underlying condition causing the seizures. In many cases, your dog may become confused, unsteady, or have an empty stare before experiencing a seizure.

Some of the symptoms of seizures in dogs include muscle twitching, jerking, collapsing, stiffening, loss of consciousness, foaming at the mouth, drooling, and tongue chewing. In addition, your dog may poop or pee during the seizure. Some dogs fall to the side and move their legs as if they are paddling.

Once the seizure ends, your dog may become temporarily blind, disoriented, or shaky. Drooling, walking in circles, bumping into things, or trying to hide while looking disoriented are signs of seizures.

Types of Dog Seizures

Dogs may experience different types of seizures, including generalized, focal, and psychomotor seizures. The most common seizures in dogs are generalized or grand mal seizures. This seizure is often exhibited by convulsion and loss of consciousness and may last between a few seconds to a few minutes. Generalized seizures are usually caused by abnormal electrical activity in the entire brain.

Focal seizures are caused by abnormal electrical activity in specific sections of the brain. They are often exhibited by unusual movements on one side of the body or limbs. Focal seizures usually last a few seconds and may transform into generalized seizures.

Psychomotor seizures often last a few minutes and are often exhibited by strange behaviors such as tail chasing and attacking an invisible enemy. This type of seizure is extremely difficult to diagnose because it can be difficult to differentiate between its symptoms and “normal” odd behavior.
